Abstract

The analysis of the Heavy Weight Defelctometer (HWD) data from the FAA National Airport Pavement Test Facility (NAPTF) indicates that the measured Sum of two Deflections (SD) on two sides of dummy joints increase proportionally to the slab curling but are insensitive to the joint Load Transfer capability defined by Deflection (LTD). This discovery is verified and extended by finite element analysis in this paper. HWD data collected from pavements at the NAPTF are used to first back-estimate the slab curling assumed due to an equivalent temperature gradient then the shear stiffness of the dummy joints are calculated. The numerical comparison of the predicted and directly measured joint and corner deflections verifies that the back- estimated parameters are reasonable.
