Roller compacted concrete (RCC) pavements have been used increasingly because of their benefits of rapid construction, economics, and hardened properties. While RCC does not experience as much free drying shrinkage as traditional Portland cement concrete (PCC) due to its lower water and cement content, there have been several reported RCC pavements showing excessive slab curling. In this study, unrestrained RCC curling beam specimens were prepared and compared to fiber reinforced concrete and traditional PCC paving mixtures in a controlled laboratory environment in order to replicate these field observations and determine potential underlying mechanisms.
