Abstract

Concrete pavements in the Tohoku Region of Japan were surveyed. It is indicated that 25 cm slab thickness has been the mainstream after 1970s and 80 percent of them can last the design service lives of 20 years under daily average volume of 700 to 1400 commercial vehicles per lane. In order to investigate cracking patterns of concretes-labs, multivaliate analysis was employed. ·According to the results of the analysis, slab width and volume of commercial vehicles were the factors greatly affecting cracking patterns of concrete slabs. Taking into account the analytical results, the current design method was modified. The results of the survey agree comparatively well with the results of the calculation by the modified method.
