Diamond saw grinding, in 1965, first provided a final surface finish to an existing concrete highway. Improvements in diamond saw blades and grinding equipment during the past twenty years have made diamond grinding the most cost effective technique to restore riding quality and skid-resistance to a structurally sound concrete pavement. The data contained in this article is based on actual restoration work by various agencies, and is written to help the reader understand diamond grinding and how it is used in the Concrete Pavement Restoration, (CPR) process. Also included is criteria for determining when diamond grinding is needed, cost effectivness of the grinding process, and tips on achieving longevity of skid-resistance.
