Development of A Pavement Condition Index for Roller Compacted Concrete Pavements: A Case Study in Turkey

Both asphalt and concrete pavements can deteriorate before their design life for a variety of reasons including traffic density, increased axle loads, overloading, climatic factors, design and construction defects and subgrade conditions. Therefore, periodic performance evaluation of roads is of great importance to the related authorities to ensure effective and timely maintenance and repair activities. In this study, a methodology was developed to evaluate the performance of roller-compacted concrete (RCC) pavements in accordance with the ASTM D6433-23 standard for concrete pavements. An appropriate pavement scoring system related to the RCC pavement condition was established. A case study was carried out on an RCC pavement that was constructed in Turkey with known subgrade characteristics to evaluate the performance of the RCC pavement produced by this method. It was found out that there is a relatively high correlation between RCC pavement performance and subgrade characteristics.
