Abstract

A compression joint system was developed to connect precast prestressed concrete (PPC) slabs. In this system, prestressing tendons are inserted through the joint, and compressive force is applied using the tendons to interconnect the slabs. The tendons are installed by fixing only both their ends to the slabs, so only damaged slabs need to be replaced, and sound slabs can be reused. The load transfer mechanism of the compression joint system was investigated, and the associated structural design method was then developed through laboratory studies. This system was used to construct 800 m2 of PPC slab pavement in the Sendai Airport taxiway.
