Abstract

The article presents the application of concrete inlays on motorways in Belgium as a solution to rutting caused by heavy traffic, especially by heavy goods vehicles. Initiated in 1993, the technique involves replacing asphalt surfacing in slow lanes with cement concrete pavement. Highlighting four specific implementations, the paper discusses the design process, construction techniques, and outcomes. Results indicate improved durability and performance, with specific attention to the bond between concrete and asphalt, compressive strength, and resistance to de-icing salts. The inlay technique is shown to offer significant benefits in terms of structural strengthening, safety, surface evenness, and reduced rolling noise, suggesting its promising future in road construction and maintenance under heavy traffic conditions.(Abstract generated by AI tool ChatGPT 4)
