This paper presents the development of a concrete pavement design procedure for container terminals under an overall consideration of the operational conditions and the functional requirements of container handling areas. Two different design criteria are adopted for areas with different usage or loading conditions. Stress analysis was based upon a solution for a free-edged rectangular thick plate on a Winkler foundation, taking into account the transverse shear deformation and the edge effect, and a comprehensive computer program was developed to produce simplified design charts and tables for stress calculations.
